Backbends and bodhichitta

Now available as a personalized workshop ONLINE!

“The teachings are always up-to-date. They are not ‘ancient wisdom’, an old legend. The teachings are not passed along as information, handed down as a grandfather tells traditional folktales to his grandchildren. It does not work that way. It is real experience.” - Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism

Join Sandi to explore the real experience of awakening courage and compassion, openness and surrender, through the gradual backbends of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and the cultivation of bodhichitta in Tibetan Buddhist Dharma.

In Buddhism, bodhichitta refers to the awakened (bodhi) heart-mind (chitta) - the compassionate motivation to liberate oneself and all sentient beings from ignorance and suffering. This motivation is considered to be the supreme ingredient in all spiritual realization, and any practice done without bodhichitta is considered to be a samsaric pursuit.

In Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, backbends could also be considered a supreme ingredient! Backbends are an integral part of every Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga practice. They can release profound and pent up emotions, boost personal confidence, and increase prana, or vital energy. The deeper backbends (for which the Ashtanga Vinyasa system is especially renowned) are safely and systematically developed overtime through a progressive series of postures that also cultivate patience and perseverance.

In this workshop, we’ll be connecting backbends with bodhichitta and building a strong foundation for strengthening and sustaining the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual motivation for yoga practice. From backbends to bodhichitta, taste the supreme nectar of practice!
